ACTION ALERT UPDATE: Gray Wolves And The Endangered Species Act Under Grave Attack!!

Obama Admin. Policies Resembling Bush Assault On The ESA

UPDATE: DECEMBER 14, 2010

PLEASE CONTINUE TO BE VIGILANT. SALAZAR IS STILL IN TALKS WITH THE GOVERNORS OF MONTANA, WYOMING AND IDAHO TO REACH A DEAL ON DELISTING WOLVES. THEY WANT TO GET IT DONE BEFORE THIS LAME DUCK SESSION IS OVER. WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.

PLEASE CONTACT  SENATOR KERRY, SENATOR SCHUMER, SENATOR BOXER AND OTHER PRO-WOLF SENATORS. CALL REPRESENTATIVE GRIJALVA (ARIZONA). ASK FOR ASSURANCES THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER  TO STOP ANY TAMPERING WITH THE ESA OR DELISTING OF GRAY WOLVES.

PLEASE CALL THE ANTI WOLF SENATORS AS WELL LIKE TESTER AND BAUCUS, WHO ARE DEMOCRATS AND SHOULD KNOW BETTER THEN TO BE PUSHING LEGISLATION LIKE THIS. TESTER IS UP FOR RE-ELECTION IN 2012 AND IS OBVIOUSLY PANDERING TO HUNTERS AND RANCHERS.

CALL EVERY SENATOR AND CONGRESSMAN THAT YOU CAN, EVERY DAY UNTIL THIS CONGRESS CONVENES. WE CANNOT ALLOW A SMALL GROUP OF HATERS TO DESTROY THE ESA AND HEAP MORE SUFFERING ONTO WOLVES. IT’S UNCONSCIONABLE TO ME THAT A DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT IS PUSHING THIS AGENDA TO PLEASE A  SMALL, LOUD MINORITY GROUP. MAKE SURE TO CONTACT PRESIDENT OBAMA AND LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS AND WHAT A HORRIBLE CHOICE HE MADE FOR DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. TELL HIM WE WANT WOLVES PROTECTED AND NO TAMPERING WITH THE LANDMARK ESA.

WE MUST BE AS RELENTLESS AS THE HATERS TO KEEP WOLVES PROTECTED!!

FLOOD THEM WITH CALLS, WE NEED TO BE HEARD!!

Gray Wolves and the Endangered Species Act are Under Attack!

Please Forward This To Everyone You Know!

Wolves were extirpated from the US by the same political forces at work now. Fifteen years after their reintroduction they are once again being targeted for elimination. Several bills are circulating in Congress to permanently delist wolves but the most dangerous is House Bill 6028 which states “…amend the Endangered Species Act of 1973 to prohibit treatment of the Gray Wolf as an endangered species or threatened species.” The Baucus’/Tester Senate bill seeks to delist wolves permanently in Montana and Idaho.

If H.R.6028 passes it could spell the end of the highly endangered Mexican gray wolf, of which only 38 survive in the wild. Four Mexican grays have been killed by poachers this year alone.

The assault on the ESA not only threatens wolves but puts every species protected under it’s umbrella in jeopardy. By allowing political influences to write wolves out of the ESA, it will embolden other special interest groups to remove any endangered or threatened species they see as an inconvenience.

Gray wolves inhabit just 5% of their historic range. They are vital apex predators who keep ungulate herds healthy by culling the weak, sick and the old. Wolves influence forest health by decreasing ungulate browsing pressure. Wolf kills provide food for many other species. Wolves are the best friend of pronghorn antelope fawns, because they control the coyote population, who feed on the fawns.

Wolves desperately need protection of the ESA, in this toxic climate. The Endangered Species Act was tailor made for a species like the wolf, which has been traditionally scapegoated and subjected to a fierce campaign of innuendo and myth.

But you can help!

Contact President Obama, Secretary Ken Salazar, U.S. Representatives, and U.S. Senators and tell them NOT to support any of these anti-wolf and anti-wildlife bills!

Pre-Written Comments

Here is a pre-written comment you may use when calling any of the contacts listed above.

“As a concerned citizen and someone who values all wildlife, I ask that you do NOT support any legislative bills that would strip gray wolves of their endangered species protections. These bills are not only a threat to wolves, but all species listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act.”

 AND

Here is a pre-written letter you may e-mail to any of the contacts listed above. We encourage that you personalize it before sending it out.

“Dear _________,

Gray wolves were once extirpated from the lower 48 states. Today, they are making a slow recovery and inhabit just 5% of their original range. If given time wolves can make a full recovery, however certain political forces want to take wolves back down that dark road to extermination.. Several bills have been submitted in Congress, or are in the process of being developed, that will prohibit listing gray wolves as endangered or threatened, under the Endangered Species Act. Some of these bills are limited to the Northern Rockies, while others cover the entire country. As a concerned citizen and someone who values all wildlife, I ask you to oppose any tampering or meddling with the ESA. Please do not support any legislation that would do so.

Wolves are a keystone species important to our ecosystem. They encourage biodiversity and improve the overall health of their habitats. When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, researchers noticed an incredible change in the environment. Wolves prevented elk from over browsing, which had negatively impacted vital riparian zones, driving away beaver, song birds and other wildlife. If given the chance, wolves can work their magic in other areas of the country. However, if wolf-hating states are given control over wolves, while they are still recovering, all of the positive impacts wolves have on the environment, will be lost.

States, like Montana and Idaho, plan to keep their wolf populations at an unhealthy and unstably low number in hopes of artificially boosting already overpopulated ungulate herds. Wyoming and Utah have a “no wolves allowed” management approach. Wolves will not survive in either of these brutal conditions.

If just one bill passes, wolves will not be the only victims. Any endangered species that inconveniences someone with power, will be next to lose their vital protections. Our wildlife is too precious to buckle under the demands of small but influential special interests.

Please do not support any anti-wolf or anti-wildlife legislation that plans to rewrite wolves out of the Endangered Species Act. Wolves need protection in order to survive.

Thank you for your time,
___________”

Every phone call, email, and fax WILL make a difference. Please protect our wildlife by ensuring that gray wolves continue to receive the protections they need and the Endangered Species Act remains strong.

    • Thank you Norma…the wolves are in deep trouble right now and they need help. We have to keep writing, calling, faxing and praying. Letting Congress and the President know wolves have a huge following will go a long way to stopping this assault on them and the ESA. If they don’t hear from us they will think nobody cares and push through their anti wolf agenda.

  5. Nabeki, I have a question. Will this bill strip Mexican Wolves off the ESA too (something that would certainly be disastrous, alongside what they want to do with the Gray Wolves), or will it make them vulnerable to get delisted? (knowing how some ranchers and hunters are getting there, this would be just as disastrous).

    • Hi Loua
The Baucus/Tester bill would strip gray wolves of their protections in Montana and Idaho. But House bill 6028 would take away protections from all gray wolves including Mexican grays. There are so many delisting bills now it’s hard to keep up with them. We can’t allow any of them to pass because that will be the end of wolves in this country. It’s a scary, scary time.
We need to keep the pressure up on Congress and hope that Salazar the rancher is removed from the Interior. He’s the at the crux of the problem.

This is what we are up against. The RMEF and other hunting groups are pushing to have wolves removed from the ESA. They are going after them with a vengeance, we have to fight back!! Read this and worry.

RMEF, NRA, SFW, SCI, MDF, and the many other groups are encouraging all to contact their US Congressman and Senators immediately to support this bill.

      Folks,

We have a situation relative to the wolf issue that we need grass roots help with ASAP.

Let me try to explain what has transpired in the last few days:

      * Senators Orin Hatch and Harry Reid have agreed to introduce a bill to call for delisting of wolves EVERYWHERE in this current Congressional session. It is as simple as that, we are calling for the total delisting of wolves period. The science is clear on this issue. GRAY WOLVES ARE NOT ENDANGERED OR EVEN THREATENED.

      * This bill would be the same bill as what Chet Edwards introduced in the House.

      * We have an issue with a couple of key senators right now that needs our grass roots attention. Senators Crapo and Risch from Idaho are introducing a bill that carves out just Montana & Idaho to delist wolves and return them back to their status before Judge Molloy’s last ruling. This will not fix the real problem and will most likely end back up in Molloy’s federal court PLUS we do not favor leaving out Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan or any other state for that matter. This issue needs to be fixed not delayed and stalled and linger in court.

      * Senator Baucus has indicated that he will introduced a bill very similar to Crapo & Risch; basically carving out just Montana and Idaho for delisting and not all states and we anticipate that the junior Senator from MT, Senator Tester will follow his lead.

Here is our call to action if you are willing to support: We need sportsmen and hunters to call the offices of Senator Crapo, Senator Ricsh, Senator Baucus and Senator Tester ask them to consider supporting the Chet Edwards bill and support what Senators Hatch and Reid and willing to sponsor. We encourage groups to ask their members to call these two Senators asking them to support the complete delisting of wolves. This is a chance for real bipartisan action and to represent the issue of states’ rights and states’ local economies.

Their Washington DC & Idaho phone numbers are:

      Crapo office (202) 224-6142 and 208-334-1776

      Risch office (202) 224-2752 and 208-342-7985

      Baucus office 202-224-2651 and 406-657-6790

      Tester office 202-224-2644 and 406-728-3003

The chance of passing this legislation in this session is most likely a long shot; however now is the time to get these politicians to go on the record to call for total delisting of wolves, period. We will not get this kind of leverage after the November election, etc……..

      • Thank you so much Loua. Just think wolves were relisted on August 5th. We endured an entire year of hell before that, with the delisting and the hunts. We couldn’t even celebrate the victory for one day before this horrific anti-wolf campaign started. Just unreal.

      • What the hell is wrong with this David “dim-wit” Allen?
Its..its just…there are no appropriate words for what is happening here. He claims science but cites nor asks for the co-operation of scientific minds. Just hunters… kinda easy to see what he’s more interested in.

        Like

      • John…remember when Allen wrote to this blog last year when the hunts were going on? He was so upset that I used their rosy 2009 elk numbers back at them. I think there was a backlash from his membership over those numbers and that’s when all this hardball stuff stuff started against wolves. The RMEF was never this radical before wolves were delisted.

This whole thing reminds me of a feeding frenzy. They smell blood in the water and they want to go in for the kill. It’s not even about wolves. It’s about getting their way here in the West. It’s an arrogance that everything has to be managed, like one big zoo. It’s disgusting and disturbing. We have to fight against these backward, outdated controling ideas.

        The battle rages on…

  6. I think you are on the right track with Kerry, Boxer, Schumer, and Grijalva. These are the pols most likely to stop anything from moving forward.

It is revealing to me that Otter opposed the Baucus/Tester bill on grounds that it replaces the state’s plan with that of the IDFG’s. It validates what we have all been saying all along.

    Like

    • Ken….I think those are the key people that would stop a push. But it still worries the heck out of me that the anti-wolfers are going to try something. Tester just attached his bad forest bill to an appropriations measure:

Tester’s forest bill included in spending measure

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester’s bill to increase both logging and wilderness areas has been included in a final spending package the lame-duck Congress is expected to take up in the coming days……

  7. Not a US citizen, but I do wish you all the very best in stopping the delisting. Sadly, the hysteria and paranoia that surrounds wolves is at far less risk of extinction than these incredible animals.

Yes, they are rival hunters, but far more livestock animals die at the hands of poor practices in the livestock industry (i.e. at the hands of humans) than to the teeth of wolves.

And even if that were not so, such actions can never justify the systematic elimination of an entire species.

    Good luck!

    • Thank you for your support Neb. We are fighting hard but it’s tough to get through to politicians that seem to always put their interests first. We thought things would change once Bush was out of office but Obama has proved to be worse. The BLM has continued their brutal round ups of our wild horses and Salazar is going after wolves. Who would have thought this would happen under a Democrat president?

    • I´m not a citizen either, unfortunately. Really, what are these people thinking of? I really hope everybody calls a lot and Obama rejects the bill. I can´t imagine what would happen if this bill got approved. Wildlife supporters are abundant, but our voices in this subject seem to be muffled…
There are so many other possibilities we could take to have a sustainable environment around wolves, but this bill has chosen to follow the easy, cheap and old alternative–killing them, getting rid of that problem the easiest and most satisfactory way, selling our minds and souls to sheer ignorance!

      Like

      • Loua…I think they are still wheeling and dealing in Congress. Tester attached his horrible forest bill to a spending measure. That’s how they do it over there. Just slip it on. Baucus wanted to add the wolf delisting bill too but was waiting for Salazar and the govs to came to an agreement. Isn’t that just great, our government in action. They make me sick.
