Imnaha Pack alpha male (ODFW)
While 55 wolves have been killed in the ongoing Montana and Idaho hunt/slaughter, Oregon’s Imnaha Pack alpha male and yearling are safe tonight, after the Oregon Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay of the” kill order” hanging over the two wolves heads!
Three environmental groups filed a lawsuit on October 5th to halt the killing of the two wolves and the judges listened. The killing of the alpha male and the younger wolf would likely have been the nail in the coffin for the Imnaha pack, leaving the alpha female, B-300 and her six month old pup to fend for themselves.
Although the injunction is temporary we call on Governor Kitzhaber to end the “witch hunt” permanently and stop the harassment of this wolf pack.
As I stated in an earlier post, Oregon ranchers lost 51,200 cattle to non-predation in 2010, so the continual coverage of miniscule wolf depredations looks like persecution, driven by the livestock industry and is casting a pall over Oregon’s reputation as a moderate and progressive state.

JOSEPH — As state biologists combed northeastern Oregon’s rugged mountains Wednesday to kill two gray wolves in the Imnaha pack, conservation groups challenged the kill order in court and called on Gov. John Kitzhaber to intercede.
Late in the day, the Oregon Court of Appeals granted their request to temporarily halt the hunt, The Associated Press reported.
Cascadia Wildlands, the Center for Biological Diversity and Oregon Wild contend that efforts by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to remove the pack’s alpha male and a younger wolf would leave only a female wolf and one pup born this year to fend for themselves this winter.
“They are proposing to take out the leader of the pack, which will, in my best estimate, render the pack unviable,” said Josh Laughlin, spokesman for the Eugene-based Cascadia Wildlands. “Oregonians are not going to stand for that.”

I can’t believe the ignorant comments in the article. These people actually believe wolves are going to eat humans! There are only 14 wolves in Oregon. They are acting like they are under every bush! I feel sorry for the wolves that went back to Idaho.

Sophie should have kept on going to western Oregon. The pack settled in Eastern Oregon, they might as well be in Idaho.

It’s been an incredible experience reading a lot of the comments by the hunters in Oregon.I’m a liberal who fought with the 173rd abn in Vietnam who never gave a thought to the kind of people in Oregon;I’ve been there,in Portland and Seaside,and had a great time but now I understand that a lot of the people I try to avoid in Georgia(racist ignorant rednecks) have kin in Oregon.I mean the comments sound as if we( Others)are about to invade.Nothing like killing to remind me of forty years ago and all the useless death.I mean do these Oregon people do anything other than pull the truck over,get out and shoot some animal.I guess it’s the Western experience.

“On behalf of our thousands of members across Oregon, we are writing today to inform you of our intent to pursue a court challenge against the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) for their ongoing practice of killing Oregon’s endangered gray wolves. The refusal of ODFW’s leadership to modify these practices (or even respond to requests for meetings to discuss the issue) leaves wildlife conservation organizations with no alternative.”
Congratulations and an expression of appreciation is in order. The caring and informed action by individuals and agencies, the many online information campaigns, all of the people who respond to campaigns, and increasingly, legal challenges are winning a guarded safety for wolves.
The way Western people perceive wilderness is changing and we need wilderness. It will come to pass. Our great need of wilderness will be generally acknowledged.
We are learning albeit a hard way to live respectfully in relation to the wild world. Wolves: the case in point. Western man’s knowledge of wolves and therefore his attitude towards them has changed one could almost say, exponentially with the result that the little Imnaha pack is safe by court order for now.
Electric fences are being subsidized and bargained into ODFW contracts. Baiting with dead livestock is under discussion where ever that specter, wolf predation is raised against herds. I have no doubt a way will be found to make cattle growers admit that they are the killers of cows, a thing they do by mismanagement in vast uninsured numbers long before ever these sad and star crossed creatures reach the squeeze chute.

Wolves are the most beautiful animals I have ever seen. They come in different sizes and colors.
They are very protective of their packs. When I see the pictures of the wolves, it makes me cry to think we will see them only in pictures, if the politicians, sports hunters, ranchers and governors get their way.
Please stop the killing of these wolves. I am so glad that the Court in Oregon is trying to stop the killing of the Imnaha Packs.

Barbara, I believe wolves are second most diverse mammal on earth besides humans. or very close to the top.. They come in so many different variations as you pointed out. Just magnificent animals.

Nabeki, wolves are very much misunderstood animals. I have seen wild dog packs which will kill just to kill.
Wolves only kill for food to feed the pack and to help keep the wild herds healthy.
Also this keeps the herds moving and then the trees and grasses grow too. Wolves do not have trophy rooms like the sports hunters do.
These blood thirsty wolf haters need an attitude adjustment.

Who destroyed much of the native North American fauna and flora -not the wolf. Who kills for money, economy, sport, self image and as a hobby, not the wolf. What animal collects parts of dead animals and places them in trophy rooms for viewing–not the wolf. Who demands the right to live anywhere, collects more stuff than god-and relies upon weapons, wheeled vechiles, medicines, buildings and clothes to define self not the wolf. Who has never learned to co-exist and forgot how to walk distances, swim rivers, climb hills, live with deep snow, and die with what they were born with not the wolf For me the wolf seems like an incredible animal. The day the wolf starts to live a life style like humans is the day we should consider hunting it.

Well said. Thankyou. Man hunts man as he hunts the wolf. Man is a problem, but not all people. There are people who feel a bond with wolves. A million hits here are to the good. It’s important that the wolves have the right to life, that people win that right for them, that there be wilderness and that wilderness be protected from man’s idea of resource. If creating and distributing crush can be outlawed sports hunting can be outlawed. Same action different hormone. Why should one be obscene therefore unlawful and the other sanctioned participation in mythos?
