Demanding Protection for the Endangered:

Advocates ‘Rally for Wolves’ in U.S. Capital

Washington, D.C.—In April 2011, the U.S. Congress tucked an unprecedented “wolf de-listing rider” into the federal budget bill and it passed.

This rider removed wolves from the Endangered Species List in the Northern Rockies—where it’s estimated that only about 1500 wolves remain. The Rally for Wolves will demand protection for wolves of the West and denounce the stalking of these animals.

Said Priscilla Feral, president of Friends of Animals: “President Obama appointed Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior. A cattle rancher who constantly undermines animals on public lands. We say: Don’t do it. Removing federal protection and subjecting wolves to more hunting is unconstitutional and unconscionable.”

Wolf advocates from all over will convene in Washington on Friday 12 August 2011 to denounce the wolf de-listing.

Friends of Animals’ legal experts are now drafting an amicus brief in the case for wolves with federal Judge Donald Molloy to buttress the case made by Alliance for the Wild Rockies and co-plaintiffs Friends of the Clearwater and WildEarth Guardians, who have filed an Appeal to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals “to preserve both wolves and the rule of law in the Northern Rockies.”

Friends of Animals also called for a complete travel and economic boycott to the states that advocate killing them: Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. These three states place the interests of elk hunters and ranchers over wolves and plan to issue wolf killing permits next month.

“We need to put the economic screws to state governments that persecute wolves at the behest of haters,” said Feral.

What: Rally for Wolves

When: Friday 12 August 2011

Where: Gather at the Capitol Reflecting Pool at 9.00 a.m. (First Street and East Capitol). Then march to the White House before convening at Lafayette Park (1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—directly across from the White House).

Friends of Animals is a non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, incorporated in the state of New York since 1957, working to cultivate a respectful view of nonhuman animals. Our goal is to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world.

  4. Due to the distance I am unable to be at that Rally – but in my Heart and in my Soul I will be with each one that is there to protest this unfair and totally ignored problem – it was and is unconstitutional – and I hope that TV will cover it and it will make all the papers –

To all of you Warriors – may your feet stay strong – and may your heart speak loudly – and maybe your intentions become clear to a President that does not care –
I wish you all the best – and my thoughts and energies will be with you.

  5. I watched most of a committee mtg about ‘wolf control’ that I was sent through email. as can be imagined – there were pro wolf and pro kill speakers. it did surprise me when one self stated hunter said more research needs to be done. he said elk population is thriving. caribou in the NW (Alaska) are doing good despite predation by wolves. someone else confused the daylights out of me with saying something about the recovery effort else where ended up being a one for one ratio. kill one wolf, another takes his place, I think??? then there was the farmer/rancher person whose family ‘subsisted on their own flock of sheep” and a pack of wolves came in a slaughtered most of the stock then left without eating anything. from the research I’ve done this is a very unusual occurance as generally wolves only kill what they will eat. I’m not in any way saying this person was wrong but it is stories like that that blow everything out of proportion! I know I’m not saying anything that hasn’t been said before… but wolves still need our help in anyway we can! even the number “15 breeding pairs” was argued against saying we need more than that for a sustainable population. the more we can get out to the public (and that too was addressed – it seems like most Americans AND other countries do not want the wolf hunted)

  6. Is that rancher sure that those were even wolves?? Also, I have a hard time believing any “rancher” that comes up with a story like that. First show me proof that it was a wolf. I WANT DNA PROOF. Scientific proof. Not just someones word. Because there are so many ANTI-Wolf haters out there + they don’t even believe in science anyways. I don’t know what else you could give these people. ??

  7. The economic boycott needs to go one step farther and include a boycott of the folks who help pay Ken Salazar’s salary and justify his job – United States National Park Service and National Parks.

    • Mark…good point. I wish someone would challenge Obama in 2012, he’s the cause of all this sadness with his rancher Interior Secretary. How could this all have happened under a Democrat President??

  8. Thank you Priscilla and Friends of Animals for once again standing up and speaking out for the wolves. We need to step up the enforcement of any methods necessary to let our HOWLS of protest be heard throughout the nation. I remember when the wolf delisting first occurred, I was participating on a blog site and one anti-wolfer made a comment saying, “Thank you Egypt for freeing us from the environmentalists.” Well Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and any one else that wants to ride the band wagon of blood lust for our wildlife, a word of warning… we are holding YOU accountable for your arrogant misdeeds and you will feel the wrath of what you have wrought….your states will pay dearly with heavy financial losses from every conceivable direction. We grow ever intolerant of your obstinate attitudes and reckless concern.

I wish for those attending the wolf rally in DC tomorrow all the very best, I am with you in heart, thought and spirit. I have been trying to spread the word wherever I can through flyers etc, was also hoping to organize something here in Pa, but unfortunately, I was injured in a fall and tore my hamstring last week, not sure what other injures to my leg as yet, and so I am basically out of commission. This especially perturbs my unrest since I can not lend my physical presence to any rallies. But I am hoping that whatever kindling I may have gathered will be sufficient to ignite a spark of appreciation and awareness for the wolves here in my area.

    Go GET ‘EM!!!!!

    For the WOLVES!!!!

    Heart Hugs & HOWLS!!!!!!!!

    • Beautiful sentiment Donna. I wonder if all those Senators that voted to delist wolves care one whit? They’re probably all on vacation without a care in the world. But we know the truth, we’ll vote them all out in 2012, at least the ones up for re-election.
