Navarre The Wolf, Shot, Paralyzed, Rescued From Freezing Waters

January 8, 2014

Revisiting Navarre’s story is a renewal of faith.  There are good people in this world who care deeply for animals like this sweet, little wolf. I hope you find comfort in this, even though it wasn’t a happy ending.

We love you Navarre!!

Kindness and love in action, saving a wolf from certain death. This beautiful video is narrated in Italian but really needs no translation. It’s heartfelt, moving and incredibly uplifting to watch  wonderful people working so hard to save a wolf’s life. To them I say:

“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day. May songbirds serenade you every step along the way. May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue. And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.”…..Irish Blessing

Saving Navarre: The Dramatic Rescue of a Paralyzed Shot Wolf

Good news: due to the selfless efforts of rescuers Navarre is slowly recovering
1
S
Following up on the dramatic and risky rescue of an entrapped female humpback whale named Valentina I just learned about another most amazing rescue of a wolf named Navarre from the icy waters of a river in Italy. Here’s the heartwarming story that may just move you to teears of joy.

“On January 9, 2012 the wolf Navarre was recovered from the icy waters of a river in very dramatic conditions: undernourished, with a paralysis of the hind limbs and with 35 lead pellets in his body.

“After several diagnostic tests, two weeks of intensive care in the infirmary, monitored 24 hours 24, Navarre started to walk. He was transferred to another enclosure of the Centre, suitable for his rehabilitation, which requires a gradual recovery of motor function without subjecting him to excessive physical effort. Thanks to a video camera placed in the enclosure Navarre is monitored day and night without being disturbed.

“It’s still a long way, various diseases have weakened him a lot, but Navarre, thanks to his incredible will to live and care he received, started to walk improving gradually and giving good signs of recovery.”

“We will continue to carry forward the ” Project Wolf” more certain than ever that this species should be protected, known and respected , stronger than we have had the privilege of learning to date and aware of what we still have to learn about these amazing animals … and for this reason grateful to Navarre .”

    • Hi Harvey,

I added their url to the bottom of the post. I think you should be able to contact them through that link. They apparently have a “Project Wolf” and there are videos on their YouTube site of other wolves they’ve rescued. It looks like they care for all wild and exotic animals that need rescuing. Hope that helps.

  14. Thanks for posting this touching story. Unfortunately the situation in Italy is not so good: Wolves are protected (they are our national symbol) but poachers and farmers kill them and never get caught. Poor Wolves this is not their world 😦

    • Loredana…Wolves have it tough all over the world. Navarre’s story was so touching and sad at the same time. At least in Italy the wolves have protected status. Before the wolf hunts started in Montana and Idaho in 2009, American wolves were subjected to poachers and Wildlife Service killings. Now not only are they being poached and also killed by Wildlife Services but they’re being subjected to brutal wolf hunts. The USFWS is poised to remove all protections for wolves across the US, which means a wolf will not be able to disperse anywhere in this country without danger of being shot and killed unless protection is mandated for each state. States will never offer the same security for wolves as the Federal Endangered Species Act. State fish and game agencies keep predator numbers low to maximize the number of elk and deer for hunters to kill. The situation is a total mess and the wolves are suffering because of it.

Did they ever find out on autopsy what killed Navarre? I know he had many problems when he was rescued, the least of which was having 35 shotgun pellets in his body. He looked like he was on his way to recovery when he was romping around in his Springtime shelter.

      • the press never said what was the real reason =( it was very sad because it seemed that he was fine. Actually the situation in italy is the worst in years and the goverment don’t do anything.

thank you for reminding us about this amazing creature, Navarre.

      • Thanks for updating us Alberto. I was wondering if there was some way to contact them to find out the details about his death? It must have been metabolic, he probably had many underlying problems after being starved, shot and frozen. Maybe kidney failure? I don’t know but he looked so happy loping in the last video ): What a beautiful boy!

This truly a story of human goodness towards a suffering animal. As mentioned, it is an older story (from 2012) yet it’s central theme of love and compassion towards those who have no voice lends continuity of hope and light for those of us who regard all life as sacred.

  20. I wish misfortune and an agonizingly painful death, preferably captured on video, for the person or persons responsible for his death… and yes, to those pondering my statement, I do place the lives of innocent wildlife above those who maliciously attack them, as not all human life is sacred… theres too damn many maniacal rednecks running around killing anything they can in the vein attempt to rescue their pathetically shrinking, and non-existent manhood… if I saw someone attacking one of my pets, I would drop them where they stand, and to me the difference here is non-existent… all life is precious until such time as it seeks to inflict pain on others… just sayin’…

  30. I’m so sad Navarre died after all he went through. I was so hoping for a happy ending for him. I just wish all the blessings in this world and the next for those good people who helped him. We hear so many stories of the terrible human abuse, neglect, and indifference toward animals. The rescuers brought a miracle into a bleak and harsh world. May Navarre help them from the spirit world.
