Why wolves? Why do people dislike them so much can’t they find something better to do with their lives than to be hunting wolves. They know what it would be like without wolves in the econo sytem that is why they brought them back even in yellow Stone the rangers said on a Documentary that all those years without wolves Yellowstone had very little vegetation for the animals to eat it was real bad. There was hardly any food for the wild animals to eat because there was to many animals. All the leaves off the trees were bare until they brought the wolves back to keep the wild animals in check they had no known predator when the wolves were gone. The reason the wolves were gone in the first place is because man hunted them to extinction.

Valerie,I feel your frustration and share it. What really needs to be culled is arrogance,ignorance and apathy, not wolves. And there are those that seek power at the trigger of a gun or ramming a rider through on a must pass bill.
But what exactly is their intention…their ultimate goal….to systemically exterminate everything they are in contention with or feel threatened by…? As a society,why are we too often seemingly incapable of learning from our past mistakes…?

I don’t think that people realiase that by doing these riders that are attached to a bill or any other bill,looses a part of their freedom.We are supposed to be “by the people’, not “by a certain group”.Testers’s bill would have never stood alone.No one stood up in the House or Senate or the President to remove that rider.They put themselves above science and ruled for a priviliged few.

Rita, you bring up an extremely important issue.
There are those who simply do not know, and others that obviously do not care. And for this, we must accept responsibility. “We the People” have become too complacent in our attitudes and reckless with our actions.
Riders are nothing new, this is true. Yet politicians are counting on the apathy and ignorance of yesterday to further enable injustice. Unfortunately, this delisting rider is only one example of how to wield power and abuse law, and wolves will bear the brutality of their narrow-minded view. We must remember that acceptance is not surrender…it is reality. And this has been a harsh reality indeed.
Our imperative now is education, to keep current issues under close scrutiny, and demand accountability. This is an obtainable goal and a reasonable objective. We can do this…and are stronger as a result of this experience.
I appreciate that times are tough for all of us, and the world is not always user friendly. But it’s time to break the vicious cycle of impotence, apathy and lethargy.

Valerie…wolves are convenient scapegoats for these disgusting haters. Wolves are voiceless and have no idea of the storm swirling around them. Apparently we’ve learned nothing from history, since it’s repeating itself before our very eyes. We must stay united and we will find a way to stop this insanity. The grass roots wolf movement is growing , we are getting stronger by the day.

We got the budget deal with the wolf rider because Democrats wanted to preserve Montana Senator John Tester’s seat in Congress, and the Republican challenging him in the 2012 election is another wolf-hater. It’s not as simple as “vote them out of office.” I can’t see dumping a Democrat to win a fundamentalist Republican who hates wolves, wants to drill the Arctic Refuge, and foster a host of social ills.
If 10 environmental groups hadn’t pushed a Settlement that basically told Congress they’d perform a victory march if wolves faced public hunts in Idaho and Montana, the budget deal might not have moved so swiftly. There’s a travesty, for sure, but some of the groups that sold out are extremely wealthy, and they refused to use their political clout to make the right thing happen. They compromised wolves for political, not ecological reasons. Who is going to say this outloud? We are.

I agree with everything you’ve said Priscilla but it would be a terrible shame if Tester was rewarded for his actions. It’s a conundrum for sure. Rehberg and Tester are trying to “out wolf each other”. Now Baucus is saying it was his idea to slip the rider in, is he trying to take the heat off Tester? The entire situation is disgusting in the extreme. I also agree the big orgs could have done more, much more. Where are the celebs that flock to causes? Why couldn’t we get one famous name to stand up for wolves in their time of need. I know Ashley Judd did a video for DOW during the hunts but I can’t think of anyone else that stepped forward. The wolves were abandoned in the end for political expediency. I don’t know if you watched the vote on Cspan but they were all laughing and joking, just another day at the office. Just a total lack of empathy.

I didn’t watch the vote, Nabeki,but what you relayed is most telling. Ashley Judd took her cues from Defenders,and other celebrities take their’s from NRDC, and the Sierra Club. Tht’s the flipping problem. These groups that sold out wolves suck up donations, try to dominate the field and fundraise off every possible move, whether or not they had/have anything to do with an action. So where were the celebrities? Under cover,keeping their mouths shut until someone fed them a line from Defenders of Wildlife et al. That’s as nauseating as anything Congress does, because the environmental groups are not politicians — they have no bloody excuse.

Of course we had to here & see this from a Canadian News station – we can’t even get a report on this in our on f_cking country. What a load of crap. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very grateful for Canada bringing this to the forefront on there news media. I just wish our media would do the same.

Excellent report. Thank you Canada for having the backbone to do the right thing. I am sending this video to several local television stations in my area and ask them why we are not covering this issue more aggressively in the USA. I wonder if we all did this in our respective regions if it would push them to take action? It’s certainly worth a try.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper is the only station that I know of that had anything on the despicable, cowardly rider known as Section 1713. It was just a couple of days before the Senate voted. He was interviewing Rand Paul of Kentucky, who said he did not support this and did not vote for the bill. Again, though I’m sure Paul was like every other Republican that vote no, not because of the wolves but because it the spending cuts weren’t big enough.
I have posted several times on Rachel Maddow’s blog, and intend to keep doing so, until she or Lawrence O’Donnell agree to pick up the story.
Yes, thank you Canada for caring about wolves in the U.S. That’s a lot more than can be said for our President and the 81.

Rhonda, Rhonda, good for you!!! Keep posting. And true, we don’t know the reasoning behind opposing this bill from Senator Paul’s perspective. I would at least like to give him the benefit of the doubt, until either he proves himself otherwise, or we find out by default.
Your comment intrigued me, and I wanted to check him out. This is from Senator Paul’s web site: “Rand Paul is a hard-working, dedicated physician, not a career politician. His entrance into politics is indicative of his life’s work: a desire to diagnose problems and provide practical solutions.”
Pleasant fantasy…I can only hope that in Senator Rand’s case it is true, we are so desperately in need of a man who will provide true leadership, for all the right reasons. We already know what to expect from Senators such as Tester, who along with Baucus,take pride in using “Montana values.” and for any others who have proven that political agenda is the true imperative. But that is the topic of another comment.
This is my point, “career politicians” are only part of the problem. It is time to take the dirty money out of politics. It is the fuel that drives the relentless beast of corruption…in all its forms.

The only media that I heard covering this in the US was Anderson Cooper and it was a fairly short sound bite. It just goes to show you how edited the news is. Nobody thought the ESA or wolves were even worth mentioning.

Last time I checked it was the middle ages, where people were afraid of the changes around them and persecuted anyone who stood in the way of “old time values”. I have been pouring over tons of material in the past couple of days looking for ideas and strategies to face this betrayal head on. I have found a few things in my research that may be helpful and have sent messages out to many people asking for assistance on this issue.
The main thing we as individuals need to continue to do is take the 5 minutes each day it takes to send a message to our representatives in office showing our support for wildlife and the science that supports a healthy ecosystem. I feel there is more damage to be done in the near future and unless we stand together, with our voices as a whole, like a pack of wolves, we will be ignored. Somebody out there has to be a champion to stand up against the lies and misinformation to get the truth out and cull the fear mongering being portrayed in the media from these people.
Aldo Leopold, an amazing story teller and by no means a scientist but well renowned in the scientific community as the founding father of ecology once wrote, “We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes – something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.”

This was one of the most profound statements I have ever read and I really think schools should require “A Sand County Almanac” to be read by students as early as 6th grade. As the vastly unknown world lay in front of him as a young man, he began to realize the importance of the harmony of nature and the lessons it can teach us every day. I hold these truths to be part of my daily life, and although I don’t get out of the house much these days, I still am able to listen to the sounds of nature from my window. The lessons are there to be learned, if you know how to listen.
My dreams of becoming a Wildlife Biologist have all been put on hold due to medical issues, but I still believe education for our younger generation is the key to ecology. There is natural law that has been overlooked by so many in the pursuit of the all mighty dollar that nobody takes the time to look at the world around them and see the perfect harmony this planet has to offer.

Terrence, my guess exactly…middle ages…and good to hear from you. I was wondering what noble quest had kept you from us. As for Leopold’s essay, I am very familiar with it, and it is truly profound and poignant, a triumph over ego and a tribute to the spirit of wilderness/nature, in all its myriad forms.
I live the very same truths as you, and so your words touch a melodious chord within me. There truly are lessons to be learned in nature, but only for those who care enough to bear true witness,and only if you have the courage to face her with contentment.
Sadly, those that can not/do not are beyond any counsel and have either lost or never had the ability to see anything beyond themselves. There are no words to describe a nurturing presence that awaits, where only the human eye can perceive,the human ear can appreciate, the human heart can celebrate, the human mind can fathom, and the human imagination can soar. No camera will ever be able to truly capture this, it must be experienced though all senses, while nurtured with respect.
I regard Mother Nature as both sage and mentor, whose vivacious strength and lyric grace evoke such reverence, that I am blissfully insignificant. And as her apprentices we must pay homage to her faithful devotion, safeguarding her gifts as our natural heirlooms, leading by example.
There is a larger perspective, a grander picture, something vast and wondrous. Many may not envision the wolf to be a part of this. Yet his presence engenders a balance where all within the landscape benefit. My sincere belief is that the wolf also teaches us to embrace our “wild” nature, to trust our instinct, our forgotten heritage, a concept many may think absurd, and still others find contemptible.

Michael W. Fox eloquently states: ” Man and wolf are not only of one earth, but they are also of one essence. The wolf is an endangered species today, thanks to man; and mankind, through his own actions in ignorance, is no less endangered.”
Henry Beston speaks of animals:
“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. It is dire for our own survival as a species to reclaim our connection with all of nature which will inevitably lead to a reunion with our own place within the web of life.

We should just send this item and all the other items that are printed of these unrational rantings of lunatics to the President and to Ken Salazar and just keep sending them until they are sick of it or the sdcret service is at my door..They are printed in the newspaper;let them see/read how these people conduct themselves.Let Obama,Salazar,and even Reid read constently about how the Senators,Reps, and Governor,constantly promoting hystria.Butch with his “wolf disaster plan”. Jon…There are so many lies in that article I don’t even know where to start. The first question you have to ask yourself about the tapeworm is if it’s so dangerous why aren’t any wolf biologists infected with it, since they are the ones handling wolves and many without gloves. The second question is, why aren’t the haters worried about getting it from their dogs since dogs carry it too. Sheep carry it and one year we took a load of sheep manure and dumped it in the garden and grew tomatoes the size of watermelons. I’m not infected with worms. It’s just another scare tactic. Phill should be afraid of hunters since they kill a hundred people a year in the US and Canada and wound another thousand. Or dogs, our domesticated wolves, who bite four million people a year and kill at least twenty. But we forgive them for it. Are going to declare a dog emergency? These people are wackos.

Not one person has gotten a tapeworm from wolves since being reintroduced 16 years ago and not one person has been attacked or killed by wolves since being reintroduced 16 years ago. I’m not going to say it will never ever happen, but the chance is extremely small. There are by far much more greater threats out there to people than wolves. phil Hart is a wackjob. idaho has a lot of them.
